The Socket Calculator has been brought to you by the Electrical Safety Council. For more safety information visit www.esc.co.uk

Most people have extension leads in their offices and homes, using 4-way bar adaptors to increase the number of appliances that they can plug into a wall socket.

However, although there is space to plug in four appliances, this does not mean it is always safe to do so. Different electrical appliances use different amounts of power. To avoid the risk of overheating and possibly fire, you should never plug into an extension lead or socket appliances that together use more than 13 amps or 3000 watts of energy.

Use our calculator to plug in some typical office and household appliances to see the effect on the load, and to get useful tips on how to avoid overloading your sockets.

Poor Earth
The Earth wire (Green & Yellow) had come loose, this was very close to the Neutral wire (blue) which was likely to energise the brass lamp it was connected to which would of led to electrocution. PAT-iT repaired and rewired free of charge.

Masking Tape Connection
The cable had been reconnect by use of masking tape, this has no insulating or thermal properties nor does it have any strength when the cable has tension allowing live wires to become free under fault conditions. This was reported to the duty holder and PAT-iT replace with a new suitable cable.

Incorrect Wiring
This plug shows a simple mistake made by many.

PAT-iT repaired this free of charge.

Fixed Wire Inspection
A customer called to say every time they washed down their espresso machine with one hand and touched another appliance with the other hand they were getting a shock. After persuading them to isolate it from the mains, we arrived later that day to discover that the earth wire had been making contact with the Neutral. Therefore energising the whole unit making it Live, it also shows signs of overheating by the melting wires.
Where accessible, appliances that are fixed wired are in PAT-iT's remit for inspection & testing.
